[Review] VUGERA SV2 Pro: The world's easiest-to-use premium dashcam

There is too much to talk about this dashcam. To keep it short, it's from South Korea and more than 98% of dashcams sold in South Korea look like the Vugera SV2 Pro. Despite BlackVue, Thinkware, and all the other major brands originating from South Korea, 98% of dashcams that I came across while visiting South Korea looked the SV2 Pro. How can this be?
Vugera is a supplier to Toyota-Lexus and has been a supplier to Mercedes-Benz for a very long time. Therefore, I don't think we need to discuss "What is Vugera?" but I will say one thing. Vugera has never marketed their brand and probably will never do so because they don't have a PR or marketing department.
So why do 98% of dashcams fitted in passenger vehicles in South Korea look like the Vugera SV2 Pro?
The reason is the touchscreen which has an intuitive guided user interface (like a smartphone) that anyone can easily use. It's so easy to use that you end up forgetting about a Wi-Fi connection. (The SV2 Pro doesn't offer Wi-Fi because you don't need it)
The SV2 Pro, like the VIOFO A329, has a direct USB Type-C connection. When connected to your smartphone, you just need to pull up the USB-drive folder and playback the footage on your smartphone. The SV2 Pro can send 100MB of data from the dashcam into your phone in under 5 seconds. An average file size (recorded at 12.5 Mbps) is 100MB. Therefore, in 5 seconds, you have footage copied or moved onto your smartphone.
There is no APP required to copy or playback on a smartphone?
Yes, no APP download or Wi-Fi setup is needed at all. This is quite amazing because in contrast, a typical dashcam APP requires download of the application itself, setup, Wi-Fi connection and ID/PW registration, etc. If you aren't tech-savvy, well, the SV2 Pro is the answer for you.
The SV2 Pro has Sony's latest STARVIS2 IMX675 image sensor and has a resolution of 1440p (Quad-HD) at the front. The rear is equipped with a low-cost Pixel Plus 1080p image sensor. Overall, the image quality at the front is good thanks to DOL-HDR (dual overlap high dynamic range).
The best part that I enjoy about the SV2 Pro is the ability to support a one-touch parking mode. That means you can switch it on or off with a touch. Unlike most dashcams where you have to connect, change the settings, and hope that everything is working fine, the SV2 Pro does it all in a touch. It's just amazing.
The SV2 Pro also has a micro-SD health check. It's automatic, but you can lookup the status of your micro-SD card and decide when should consider replacing it before something goes wrong and your footages aren't saved anymore.
It also has a Car Battery Charge Level meter. It tells you whether your battery is well charged (SOC) or not. If your battery meter shows a low sign, you might consider switching parking mode off.
Now, the most advanced thing about the SV2 Pro is its ability to consume just 3mA in impact-only parking mode. That's less than 1/100 of an average dashcam's consumption in parking mode. It's not switched off, but just in sleep mode. As a result, there is no rebooting of the system required at all. Once the car is in accessory mode, the recording mode exits parking mode and switches into driving mode.
It's just a different level of experience. Compare this to any dashcam sold on Amazon or eBay today. It feels like 10 or 20 years ahead apart from the design which is due to the touchscreen.
What's quite shocking is that most dashcams market their ability to connect Wi-Fi and download footage over an APP which 50% of the time works or lucky if you can download 100MB in under 5 seconds.
This explains why 98% of dashcams in South Korea all look like the SV2 Pro.
What I liked:
- Front camera with Sony STARVIS2 IMX675 Image Sensor
- Dual Overlap High Dynamic Range (HDR)
- USB Direct Connectivity (No Wi-Fi, No APP, No Setup)
- Download 100MB in under 5 seconds (1x Front/Rear file at 30FPS = 100MB)
- Car Battery Health Check Diagnosis
- Maximum micro-SD size supports 1TB (Terra-byte)
- Micro-SD Health Check Diagnosis (Format Free)
- Super Low-Power Mode (3mAh consumption in Impact-only mode)
- New Generation Start-up from Parking Mode to Driving Mode (no-booting)
- Speedometer Display Mode (Driver Assist)
- High Endurance genuine (Samsung V-NAND) 128GB micro-SD card package
- Can be used as a rearview monitor or Head-up display to monitor speed
What I didn't like:
- Design
- No cloud internet connectivity
- No STARVIS2 technology in the rear camera
- Low-cost rear image sensor
- OBD2 power cable is optional
Check out a video comparison I made of the Vugera SV2 Pro versus my BlackVue 970X Plus 4K which unfortunately doesn't support HDR.
